Fighting Climate Change with Cardiff Sand Dunes
ENCINITAS, Calif. – The city of Encinitas used some giant scissors to cut a giant ribbon, to celebrate some giant piles of sand on Cardiff State Beach.
Sometimes giant piles of sand are just sand. But these piles are not. They’re engineered “living dunes” that have been five years in the making. And they’re part of an ongoing effort to save Cardiff from rising sea levels.
These super dunes may even provide a roadmap for saving other beaches that are susceptible to climate change, up and down California’s coast.
Erosion, Erosion, Erosion
When it comes to California’s beaches, erosion is normal. Our coastal landscapes are meant to change. However, rising sea levels and intense storms have exacerbated the dangers of erosion, and the fact that we’ve built homes and infrastructure right up against it means that it’s a huge concern.
In many places, we fight against erosion by “nourishing” beaches, which means adding a bunch of sand to increase their size, like at Zuma Beach in Malibu. We sometimes also line the beaches with giant rocks, especially along roads, the hope being that those rocks will absorb some of the energy put out by the powerful ocean, thus saving the infrastructure behind them.

That’s what officials were doing at Cardiff for years, in an effort to protect the beach and North Coast Highway 101, but it wasn’t working.
“[Cardiff] was already experiencing flooding during extreme high tide events and during extreme storms,” said Jayme Timberlake, Coastal Zone Program Administrator for the City of Encinitas.
Any sand that they used to nourish the beach was quickly washed away, shrinking its usable area. And the rocks that they used to protect the 101 were just being thrown up onto it.
“It did cause a lot of issues with access, access to the highway itself. The highway is pretty critical for daily commuters,” said Timberlake.
Recognizing that the problem wasn’t going to get any better as sea levels rose, the city decided to act, and over the course of five years designed and built a “living shoreline.”
While the process is similar to beach nourishment in that it uses a lot of sand, it’s completely different in that it’s meticulously engineered, offers tiers of protection and is designed to last a long time.
Like a Sandy Layer Cake
Beneath the piles of sand are rocks, or cobble, that are stacked at specific angles, and increase in size the further you get from the water. They’re buried about ten feet deep and are sitting on top of a thick fabric that’s designed to keep them from sinking.
“There’s science backing cobble at being pretty effective at shoreline protection. It stacks up more steeply and higher as waves attack it,” said Brian Leslie, Senior Coastal Scientist with GHD, a firm that the city contracted with on the project. “It’s … like this first line of defense for the dune, so the dune doesn’t get eroded right away when we start to get these big waves and tides.”
The city installed sand fences and planted native vegetation on top of the mounds to stop them from blowing away. There’s also the added benefit of building natural habitat for the adorable snowy plovers.
“This is a coastal strand that was formerly … a dune system, so it’s bringing back what used to be here and it’s meant to be a permanent feature,” said Leslie.
The dunes will erode so they’ll require nourishing, though it’s unclear how often at this time…

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Dune construction was finalized with the planting of native dune species, such as beach primrose and red-sand verbena, and the installation of beach access fencing, which delineates public access paths through the dune systems and helps protect the dunes from erosion.

Cardiff School Construction Update
Construction on Cardiff School has continued over the last month with installation of underground utilities (gas, electric and communications); electrical work; and rough grading for the new building pads.
Additionally, the parking lot and walkways have been patched to allow for use once school resumes.
Power has been restored this week in advance of teachers and students returning to campus. Teachers returned on Tuesday, Aug. 20 and students returned on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
In order to be able to continue operating the school, construction is occurring in phases. All 60-70-year-old buildings are now gone. The main administration building and one, two-room classroom building remain intact. These buildings – along with eight portable classrooms – are fully functional and will house the school’s and District’s administrative offices and grades K-1 while the rest of the campus is being constructed. Students in second grade will attend classes at Ada W. Harris Elementary School during the construction. Second grade will once again be at Cardiff School when it reopens in August 2020.
Construction activity is currently diminishing and is focusing on preparing the eastern portion of the site for construction of new classroom buildings. Starting in November 2019, construction on the new classroom buildings will commence.
In June 2020, the eight portable classrooms will be removed from the site and one remaining new classroom building will begin construction along with the remodel of the two classrooms attached to the administration building. New classroom buildings are scheduled to be completed by the end of Summer 2020 and the school will be ready to receive all K-2 students. The remaining classroom building will be completed in the Spring 2021. At that time the contractor will remove all remaining equipment and job site trailers from the site and the school’s new play fields will be built and be ready for all K-2 students when they return in August 2021. At this time the District will once again make the school’s play fields available to the community when not being used by the school or District.
Cardiff School play fields are owned solely by the District and are not a City or Community Park. The District named the Cardiff School play fields George Berkich Park to honor a previous Cardiff School principal and granted the City permission to use the school’s play fields for outdoor recreation programs in the early 1990’s because the City lacked its own park land at that time.
Tree Removal Update
The District is committed to preserving as many trees as possible on the school site, and has worked closely with its architect, landscape architect, two arborists and contractors to identify several existing trees that will remain in place.
Approximately 53 new trees are being added to the site and 17 fruiting trees are being relocated or replaced in kind. At the end of construction there will be over 30 more trees on the site than there were previously. These trees will also be more appropriate for the location and consistent with the current City of Encinitas landscape guidelines.
Unfortunately, two trees the District originally attempted to keep must be removed. Although these trees were known to be close to the proposed buildings, the District had hoped they could be kept. Once the site was cleared and new buildings locations determined, it became apparent these trees and their root structures were too close to the new buildings. The District had originally designed a site plan that worked around almost all existing trees, especially the larger trees. When the District redesigned the site to accommodate community requests to consolidate buildings on the eastern portion of the site many of these trees originally planned to remain had to be removed.
The District has been working closely with two arborists and they have recommended the Torrey Pine and Aleppo Pine located at the northeast corner of the site should be removed for safety reasons. The District is working to save a Magnolia tree that was previously identified for removal. This tree is located just southeast of the library.
What’s Next
The District also continues to work through legal issues spurred on by a small group of neighbors who are opposed to the project. Most recently, this group filed a temporary restraining order (TRO) requesting the court halt all construction on the project. If they had been successful, Cardiff School would have been unable to receive students this year.
Instead, the court granted a “limited” TRO, which only temporarily stops construction on the school play fields, except for utility work, until the legal issues can be resolved by the court. The TRO does not affect any other areas of construction on the site and the court has set dates in October

Full Overnight Closures of Manchester Avenue at I-5 on September 8th-13th
Starting Sunday, September 8, and continuing until Friday, September 13, a full overnight closure of eastbound and westbound Manchester Avenue at Interstate 5 (I-5) will take place each night between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
As part of the San Elijo Lagoon Highway Bridge Replacement Project, Caltrans and SANDAG construction crews have begun removing falsework – temporary steel and wooden support structures – from the newly constructed southbound exterior highway bridge. These overnight closures will allow crews to remove bridge falsework directly above the Manchester Avenue surface street.
All I-5 on-ramps and off-ramps will remain open during these overnight closures and will provide access to eastbound and westbound detour routes for the traveling public. Please note, daytime eastbound and westbound motor vehicle access on Manchester Avenue at I-5 will be maintained between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Surface Temperatures Can Burn Paws

Dog's paws do not blister like human skin so you cannot use that to tell if it's a safe temperature or if their feet are ok. How do you know when your pet is dangerously over-heated?

Signs that we can look for in heat exhaustion is heavy panting, drooling, difficulty breathing, dizziness, weakness, dry bright red or pale gums and rapid heartbeat. If you think your dog is suffering from heat stroke, it's important to get them wet immediately to have their body temperature lowered. Below are 3 steps of what you can do to lower your pet's body temperature:
1. One way to do that is to make sure they have cold water to drink.
2. Then take some towels, soak them in water and ring it on-top of them until their breathing starts to settle. It's important not to lay the towels on-top of them because that can actually keep the heat in.
3. The fastest way would be to hose them down. If your animal has signs that they need to come to the hospital make sure to water them down first then bring them straight to the E.R.

It’s that time of year again, and Taste of Cardiff is here! What better way to spend a spring evening in our beautiful town than sampling dishes from your favorite local restaurants and sipping on your favorite local beverages?

It’s that time of year again, and Taste of Cardiff is here! What better way to spend a spring evening in our beautiful town than sampling dishes from your favorite local restaurants and sipping on your favorite local beverages? In addition to the Cardiff restaurants and San Diego libations we all know and love, there will be a few newcomers this year that I am very excited about. Fish 101 will be sampling some of their grub from their new location on San Elijo Ave. which is bound to be delicious. Cardiff-by-the-Sea Lodge will be hosting two new Sip Stops, JuneShine, a local hard-kombucha company, and Pure Project, a San Diego brewery focused on tropical flavors and brewing sustainably. This event is always a blast, but here are a few do’s and don’ts to make sure you get the most out of the evening:
Do make a plan: whether you want to start at the north end of town at Cicciotti’s, the south end at Tower 13, or somewhere in between, just make sure you know where you want to start and where you want to end. There’s a lot of ground to cover and if you want to hit every taste and sip stop (which I highly recommend) you’ll just need to make sure you know where you are going. Sunset is at 7:30 pm if you want to time your route around being somewhere with a view, such as the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Lodge roof or walking along the beach to Restaurant Row.
Don’t be late: with 16 tastes and 17 sips, there is no time to waste! The event starts at 5:00 pm and will call is open at 3pm, so there is plenty of time to pick up your tickets and be where you want to be by the time the event starts. I’ve never heard anyone say they wish the event was shorter so make sure you get there as early as possible.
Do snap some photos in the Camera Camper: this is great way to get some memories of the night and take home so great pictures for free. The Camera Camper will be parked in the Cardiff Animal Hospital lot along with the band Aviator Stash so you can enjoy some tunes while in line and drink M Kombucha.
Don’t miss the music: this year there will be 7 local bands in different locations throughout the event. Genres range from indie/alternative to reggae to children’s bands, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Do ride your bike: Electra will again host a bike valet in the parking lot in front of Harbaugh Parkway on the corner of Chesterfield Dr. and San Elijo Ave. This is a great way to avoid traffic and parking, making it quick and easy to get from one end of the event to the other.
Don’t skip Restaurant Row: while it is a little further from the center of the event it is well worth the walk or ride. There are some great tastes and music to enjoy this direction, and the walk is right along the beach, something you don’t want to miss.
Do vote for the Golden Fork award: each year the participating restaurants battle it out to earn the coveted prize from the event. Tower 13 won last year and will be defending their title, but the competition will be tough as other restaurants have their eye on it. Make sure to keep note of which dish was your favorite and cast your vote after the event. An email will be sent out during the event for you to vote!

Cardiff-by-the-Sea Conceptual Master Plan Wins ALSA Award
The Cardiff-by-the-Sea Conceptual Master Plan was created back in 2014. This plan was created to improve traffic flow and roadways in Cardiff-by-the-Sea which was created by the Cardiff 101 Main Street Association lead by the Design Committee as part of Cardiff 101 Main Street and the LdG Landscape Architects.
Project Goals:
To create greater connection and walkability to surrounding areas in the community including north to the Composer District, west to the Carpentier Parkway and San Elijo State Beach Campgrounds.
To improve circulation for pedestrians, bicycles and cars into and through the Cardiff Specific Plan Area.
Identification of areas in need of pedestrian improvements such as damaged, inadequate, missing or incomplete sidewalks or pathways.
Review of significant intersections and gateways into the Cardiff Specific Plan Area and recommendations for promoting traffic calming while avoiding back-up or congestion.
Retain community character and build upon existing amenities while identifying new opportunities.
Propose means for “quiet zone” to minimize or eliminate the need for train horns.
Incorporate previous studies and designs into the final conceptual streetscape plan, (Cardiff Parking Study, Rail Trail, and the Cardiff Specific Plan).

How Racepacepups was born:
Kimberli has an athletic background in Division One collegiate soccer, followed years later with a new love for running. One day after running a marathon, Kimberli was on the beach reliving her race… She noticed a woman running on the beach with her dog and her mood was instantly lifted. The idea of combining her love for dogs and running changed everything for Kimberli’s career.
In 2016, Racepacepups was born. Kimberli runs with overweight dogs who need exercise for health reasons, pups who have excess energy and need an outlet, dogs who suffer from separation anxiety, as well as dogs who simply love to RUN!
Kimberli tailors each workout plan specifically to your dog’s needs and athletic abilities. Just like with humans, each dogs has different workout needs. This is why Kimberli offers one-on-one running sessions and walking (as necessary) for your dog.
Kimberli Runs In:
La Jolla, Encinitas, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Leucadia and Carlsbad.

$25 for 30 minutes, $30 for 45 minutes or $35 for one hour.

The 11th Annual Kringle Mingle event took place in the North Courtyard of Cardiff Town Center on December 2nd, 2018. We love when our community comes together to enjoy the lively music by Bucket Ruckus and Hullabaloo Band, holiday treats, savory soup from Rimel’s, kid’s crafts, free photos with surfing Santa in the Camera Camper and a place to hang-out with family and friends!

San Diego, CA- Beta Wealth Group, a leading San Diego based wealth management firm, announced today that its founder and CEO Jodi Vleck has been named one of the country’s Top Wealth Advisor Moms by Working Mother Magazine and Shook Research. Of the 200 working mothers named top in their field, only two, including Vleck were from San Diego. Shook Research used service models, investing process, client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records, firm nominations, and quantitative criteria, such as assets under management and revenue generated for their firms in recognizing the top women wealth advisors who are mothers with at least one child living at home and under the age of 18. Vleck is a mother of two boys, who are currently 10 and 8.
Women like Vleck are very important to driving females into the San Diego workforce and as role model to other women, especially those with children. San Diego has the lowest percentage of women in the workforce at 44 percent compared to 71 percent are women with children under 18 years of age according to the Department of Labor. Thirty-two percent of women in the nation have chosen financial advisory as a career, yet only 14 percent are heads of brokerages, like Vleck.
“It’s wonderful that Working Mother magazine and Shook Research are recognizing women in their careers and I am honored to be receiving this award,” said Jodi Vleck. “This honor is different than others I have received in the wealth advisory field and it means a lit to our entire family. The boy are especially proud and feel included in the recognition.”
Vleck, a Certified Financial Planner founded Beta Wealth Group in 2009, with a toddler and five months pregnant with her second child. She has been instrumental in establishing business development strategies, building the firm’s clientele, and reaching out to specialized professional segments, including technology, engineering and biotech executives. Today, Beta Wealth Group is one of the few independent, fee only firms in San Diego that specialize in serving these specific market segments. During the past nine years, her leadership and insights have resulted in incredible year-over-year revenue growth, with assets under management now eclipsing over $250 million, making Beta Wealth Group, one of the largest in San Diego. An incredible task, having started from zero and as a working mother.
Vleck is an active mother on the boys’ school parent teacher association and is the title sponsor on one of the largest fundraising events of the year for the school. On Saturdays, you can find her cheering for her sons from the sidelines of their favorite sports. She also supports the boys education, helping the with their homework and special school projects, especially those that involve math and finance.

Early Origins
1010data's approach to data management and analysis traces its origins to the early days of data analytics.
