The Learning List
Guest Post From Pupologie!
By Pupologie
If you are tired of feeling insecure and unsure about what choices to make for your pet’s wellbeing, this list is for you.
When I was twenty-three years old, someone taught me how to read pet food labels. At the start of the lesson, I was looking forward to learning something new that could help me on my journey of pet parenting. By the end of the lesson, I was stunned and sick inside over the unthinkable things I learned. The WRONG things that I learned. My naivety was instantly snatched up and I was forever changed. From there I set out to learn everything I could so that I would be able to make a difference. Two years later I opened Pupologie and I have been helping pet families avoid the traps and navigate the toxic terrain ever since.
This is a compilation of the literature, videos, and links that have been most helpful to me in navigating the world of pet nutrition and the overlapping world of commercial pet food. Through these resources you will learn everything you need to know: the good, the bad, the despicable.

What to do if someone at home has coronavirus symptoms.
What to Do If Someone at Home has Coronavirus Symptoms
CDC says isolate at home if sick and prevent spread
You may be doing everything health experts are recommending to prevent getting COVID-19, such as washing your hands often and practicing social distancing. But what happens when you or someone in your house starts showing COVID-19 symptoms or has tested positive for the new coronavirus?
While an unpleasant situation to think about, it is critically important to be prepared for any emergency at home involving COVID-19.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says most people who get COVID-19 will only have what is considered a mild illness and will be able to recover at home.
Nevertheless, people with COVID-19 need to monitor their symptoms. If they show any of the emergency warning signs — including trouble breathing, persistent pain in chest — they need to seek medical attention right away. Additional steps must be taken to help prevent the spread of the potentially deadly virus in the household.
What is home isolation?
“Home isolation is recommended for people who are ill with COVID-19 and are a risk to their family and visitors. They must be carefully watched in case their symptoms worsen,” says Ghazala Sharieff, MD, Scripps chief medical officer, clinical excellence and experience.
The CDC recommends that people with COVID-19 or who believe they are infected should:
Stay home and do not leave unless it’s for medical care. Get rest and stay hydrated.
Monitor your symptoms and call medical facilities ahead of time before seeking care there.
Keep a distance from others as much as possible. Stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom.
Wear a cloth face covering over your mouth and nose when around others.
Cover your coughs and sneezes; throw away tissues in a lined trash can and immediately wash hands.
Clean all high-touch surfaces in your isolation area – including phones, remote controls, counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, keyboards, tablets and bedside tables.
Let someone else clean and disinfect surfaces in common areas, but not your bedroom and bathroom as long as you’re sick.
Don’t use public transportation, ridesharing or taxis.
In addition to isolating yourself if you're sick, the whole household should quarantine at home for 14 days, as symptoms may appear two to 14 days after exposure.
Caring at home for people with COVID-19
If someone in your house has COVID-19 or symptoms and is told to stay home and monitor their condition, you may provide support for the sick person, but be careful.
“The person who is sick should stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom if possible,” says Dr. Sharieff. “Check up on them several times a day and monitor for emergency signs.”
Make sure the sick person is drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and getting plenty of rest. Provide over-the-counter medication to treat symptoms when appropriate.
“Ask through the door how they are doing. Give them a video call if they aren’t too ill,” Dr. Sharieff says. “If you must go inside, keep your distance and wear a mask, especially if the sick person can’t wear one and use gloves.”
Wash your hands with soap and water after interacting with the sick person to help prevent the spread of germs in the household.
In addition, the CDC recommends the following measures be taken for people who are sick:
Have them take their temperature regularly.
Make sure they wear a cloth face covering their mouth and nose when around others and stay six feet away.
Call their health care provider if they are getting sicker (such as not being able to eat, drink or go to the bathroom).
Limit contact with animals. There is no evidence of pet-to-human transmission, but caution is urged.
Prohibit visitors who do not need to be in the home.
People who are not sick should not clean the room of someone who has COVID-19, or should do it only on an as-needed basis and take precautions. If you only have one bathroom, use air conditioning or an opened window – weather permitting – to improve airflow.
When to end home isolation
According to the CDC, the following conditions are recommended before ending home isolation if you haven’t been tested:
No fever for at least 72 hours (without using fever-reducing medicine).
Other symptoms are gone, such as coughing or shortness of breath.
At least seven days have passed since the first symptoms appeared.
Ending home isolation should be done in consultation with your health care provider and state and local health departments.
Prepare in advance
It’s not too late to plan ahead in case you or someone in your house gets sick with COVID-19 and is told to isolate at home while they recover.
Basic supplies to have on hand should include:
• A working thermometer to monitor fever
• Fever-reducing medications
• Rubber or latex disposable gloves
• Regular soap and hand sanitizer
• Tissues to cover sneezes and coughs
• Disinfectant cleaning supplies
If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, tell the operator that you have or might have COVID-19.

Edward Jones: CARES Act Provides Investors, Business Owners with Opportunities
Edward Jones: CARES Act Provides Investors, Business Owners with Opportunities
For Edward Jones financial advisors, passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act has been a jolt of good news in an otherwise deeply unsettling time.
"Obviously, our biggest concern is for the well-being of everyone in our community," Trevor Heglund says. "And we hope everyone is practicing social distancing and doing everything they can to keep themselves, their loved ones and their neighbors safe and healthy. But beyond the physical worries caused by the coronavirus, there have been deep economic concerns, and the CARES Act is an important move toward addressing some of these."
Heglund says that several provisions of the CARES Act may be of particular benefit to investors:
Direct payments - Individuals will receive a one-time payment of up to $1,200; this amount is reduced for incomes over $75,000 and eliminated altogether at $99,000. Joint filers will receive up to $2,400, with this amount reduced for incomes over $150,000 and eliminated at $198,000 for joint filers with no children. Plus, taxpayers with children will receive an extra $500 for each dependent child under the age of 17.
"One possible idea for this money is to use it as part of an emergency fund," Heglund says. "By putting it in a low-risk, liquid account, you'll have it available when you need it for any large, unexpected expenses during the next several months."
Expanded unemployment benefits - The CARE Act provides $250 billion for extended unemployment insurance, expands eligibility and provides workers with an additional $600 per week for four months, in addition to what state programs pay. Unemployment benefits will also be extended through Dec. 31 for eligible workers. And the provisions also cover the self-employed, independent contractors and "gig economy" workers.
"These benefits can provide a lifeline to many workers," Heglund says. "And they may be able to help people avoid liquidating some long-term investments earmarked for retirement just to meet their daily cash flow needs. So, in that sense, the money can help individuals feel more secure today and in the future."
No penalty on early withdrawals - Typically, individuals must pay a 10% penalty on early withdrawals from IRAs, 401(k)s and similar retirement accounts. Under the CARES Act, this penalty will be waived for individuals who qualify for COVID-19 relief for distributions up to $100,000 in aggregate from IRAs and plans that allow COVID-19 distributions. Withdrawals will still be taxable, but the taxes can be spread out over three years.
"Waiving the 10% penalty is a positive move during times like this," Heglund says, "but we would still advise our clients that, if they really have a need for the money, to look at other sources first, because IRAs and 401(k)s are long-term vehicles designed to help support people during their retirement years."
Suspension of required withdrawals - Owners of traditional IRAs and 401(k)s are usually required to start taking withdrawals from these accounts once they reach 72. The CARES Act waives these required minimum distributions for 2020.
"Of course, if people need the money, they can still tap into these funds," Heglund says. "But, if not, this provision gives the money even more time to grow on a tax-deferred basis.
Increase in retirement plan loan limit - 401(k) investors who qualify for COVID-19 relief can now borrow up to $100,000 from their accounts, up from $50,000, provided their plan allows loans.
"We recommend that you exhaust some of the other provisions associated with the CARES Act first, such as mortgage and student loan relief, or using the direct payment to bridge the gap on current expenses before taking a distribution or loan from your retirement account," Heglund says. "If you decide to take a withdrawal or loan we recommend you work with your financial advisor to consider developing strategies to recontribute/pay back these funds over time to reduce any long-term impact to your retirement goals."
Another key part of the CARES Act provides $349 billion to help small businesses - those with fewer than 500 employees - retain workers and avoid closing up shop. A significant part of this small-business relief is the Paycheck Protection Program. This initiative provides federally guaranteed loans to small businesses that maintain their payroll during this emergency. Significantly, these loans may be forgiven if borrowers use the loans for payroll and other essential business expenses (such as mortgage interest, rent and utilities) and maintain their payroll during the crisis.
"Small businesses are really the economic backbone in many of the communities in which we have our offices," Heglund says. "I would certainly encourage our clients who are business owners, and any business owner, to explore this opportunity."
Ultimately, Heglund says, the CARES Act may be seen as another steppingstone on the road back to recovery, from a financial standpoint.
"We've still got some major challenges, but it's encouraging to see our lawmakers coming together to offer some concrete steps to provide relief to investors and business owners," Heglund says. "We all need to work together to get through this challenging time, and I'm confident we'll do just that."

The Fittest Dog
The Fittest Dog is a local dog running business started by Kimberli Weeks. Find out how our four-legged friends benefit, physically and mentally, from a run with The Fittest Dog.
The Fittest Dog is a rapidly growing dog running business based in Cardiff, but serving a large part of San Diego County. Owner Kimberli Weeks started this business as racepacepups in 2016, and after three years of logging thousands of miles running San Diego dogs, has brought on a team of talented athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who believe in this mission based business of getting our dogs fit, both physically AND mentally.
Ernie in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. The Fittest Dog is a dog running service owned by Kimberli Weeks.
Hiring The Fittest Dog to run your dog in a one-on-one method as opposed to hiring a dog walking service, has benefits most owners don't realize beforehand. With over 53% of US dogs overweight or obese, now is the time to make a difference in the longevity of your dogs life! Kimberli says the first time an owner of a previously anxious recent rescue, cried to her that her dog has been transformed, she realized this was much more than "just a fun dog run". This exact moment is what changed her business to a passionate cause. Anxious pups need a positive redirection and the focus running brings is pure joy when calm energy takes over, and skittish barking subsides! She also has had Veterinarians refer patients to her service to be put on weight loss fitness programs, and hunting dogs during off season to stay fit! Her business has helped all levels of fitness and will continue to do so on a larger platform.
In 2020, The Fittest Dog will continue local partnerships as well as new national canine wellness brands. She is an advocate on dog fitness and welcomes any questions, whether it be over phone, email or even outside Seaside Market where she will most likely be petting your dog! SAVE ENERGY AND KEEP YOUR BUSINESS SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
With office parties to coordinate and gifts to send, things can get hectic for businesses during the holidays, as well as expensive. One expense a business can cut down on and save energy on is electricity. When it comes to saving energy, it’s often the simplest but most overlooked things that can have the most impact. Do your part this holiday season to save energy and keep your customers, business and employees safe. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Opt for LED lights. As the Department of Energy notes, LED lights consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent lights. Install safer and more energy-efficient lighting like LED holiday lights. LEDs are also cooler than incandescent lights reducing the risk of combustion and are sturdier making them more resistant to breakage.
Use power strips to energize holiday decorations. Holiday lights and neon decorations bring festive cheer into a business space but when these items aren’t on – they still draw energy. Help reduce this expense by plugging holiday decorations into a power strip and turning it off when energy isn’t being used.
Get creative with your lighting display. Not everything is about strands of lights. Reflective ornaments and tinsel are just as bright at night, multiplying your resources for shine.
Use rechargeable batteries. Rather than plugging holiday decorations into the electrical mains, use battery-powered decorations instead. Rechargeable batteries are more cost-effective than conventional batteries and will save electricity.
Install a timer for holiday lights. Holiday lights flickering away on a tree with nobody there to enjoy them is a waste of energy and money. Installing a light timer in the office allows you to turn lights on and off at specific times, meaning lights won’t be left on unnecessarily.
Prevent a fire. Keep flammable substances a safe distance away from open flames or electric heaters to prevent objects and equipment from catching fire.
Update your contact information. SDG&E can send you email and text alerts in the event of an emergency or outage with the latest information. Update your contact information and enroll today at sdge.com/myaccount.

Scripps Healthcare
As fall nears so does the start of open enrollment season, that time of the year when you can sign up, renew or make changes to your health insurance plan.
Four Questions to Help You Choose a Health Insurance Plan from Scripps Healthcare
As fall nears so does the start of open enrollment season, that time of the year when you can sign up, renew or make changes to your health insurance plan. Many companies have their open enrollment periods in October and November with coverage becoming effective at the start of the new year. So, if you need to make changes to the coverage you currently have or switch to a new plan, now is the time to learn more about your options.
Always remember, choosing the best health plan for you and your family is an important decision. To help you make the best decision about your health coverage, consider the four questions below. Your answers should give you a better idea of what you need and want as you weigh your options.
Who will provide your insurance?
Most of us have health insurance through our own employer or our spouse’s and choose from the plans offered by that employer.
If you’re signing up for benefits for the first time, remember it’s common to spend some time reviewing each plan option. If you have insurance already, it’s also common to allow your benefits to renew automatically when open enrollment comes around. Just remember to check for any changes in your coverage or costs and remember to look for specific enrollment dates and deadlines.
While open enrollment offers only a window of time to make changes, remember you can make changes to your health plan at other times during the year if you qualify for special enrollment due to qualifying life events, such as marriage, birth of a child, moving or loss of health coverage.
If you do not have insurance through your employer, or are self-employed, you will need to purchase your own insurance. You can do this through a private insurance agent or broker, or through the state's health insurance exchange, Covered California (www.coveredca.com). You may purchase or renew health coverage through Covered California October through January each year.
Depending on your income, you may qualify for federal subsidies to help reduce the cost of your coverage when you purchase insurance through Covered California.
If you are 65 or older, you are eligible to obtain insurance through Medicare. You may enroll in a Medicare plan or change your current plan during the Medicare open enrollment period from October 15 to December 7 each year.
2. What type of plan do you need?
Most health insurance plans fall into one of three categories:
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans require you to use physicians and hospitals from a specific list, known as the “network.” Your costs are lower when you use an “in-network” provider. If you choose a provider who is not in the network, your care is usually not covered. You may be responsible for the entire bill unless it is an emergency. Also, your primary care physician must refer you to specialists or other services for them to be covered by the HMO.
Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plans are similar to HMOs but may not require a referral from your primary care provider to see a specialist.
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans also have a network of providers. If you use a doctor or hospital outside of the network, your PPO may cover some of the cost, but not as much as if you stay within the network. You do not need a referral from your primary care physician to see a specialist. In general, PPO plans offer a wider selection of doctors and hospitals than HMO plans but are more expensive.
There may be a lot of variation among individual HMO, EPO and PPO plans, so read the plan information carefully.
3. What services do you need?
Think about the type of medical services that you need, including specialty care, as well as any prescription medications. If you want to stay with the physician you have now, call the office and ask which plans he or she will be participating in. If your medical needs have changed, or you want a new physician or hospital, now may be the time to change to a different plan. If you have questions about which plans include Scripps physicians and hospitals, call 1-800-SCRIPPS.
Make a list with two columns. In the first column, list what your coverage must include, such as specific physicians or hospitals, or brand-name prescription drug coverage.
In the second column, list services that you would like to have, but are willing to give up if necessary. For example, acupuncture may be on your wish list, but not an absolute necessity.
Consider your individual needs and make sure your plan covers them at a cost you can afford—which brings us to the next question.
4. How much are your premiums, deductible and out-of-pocket costs?
Premiums – the amount you pay every month for your health plan – are just part of your total insurance costs. As you review different plans, also consider their additional out-of-pocket costs, including:
The deductible is the amount you must pay out-of-pocket before your health insurance will begin to cover your medical bills. Some services, such as screening mammograms, are exempt from deductibles, but in most cases, you will have to pay the deductible before your full coverage kicks in. Generally, the higher your monthly premium, the lower your deductible (and vice versa).
A co-pay is a set amount you pay for each doctor visit, prescription, lab test and so on. For example, you may have a $35 co-pay every time you see the doctor, regardless of your deductible amount.
Coinsurance is the amount that you owe after your insurance plan pays its share. For example, your insurance may pay 80% of a hospital stay, and you pay 20%.
These amounts very widely according to the type of plan you choose, so be sure to read all information regarding costs closely.
For more information or assistance in choosing a health plan, please contact a Scripps Health concierge at 1-800-SCRIPPS (1-800-727-4777).

Meet Trevor, our newest member with Edward Jones. Read on to learn more about Trevor and why he chose to work with Edward Jones as a financial advisor in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
“One of my most formative memories was the day I graduated from California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo; with $0.91 in the bank and three weeks until my engineering degree would be put to use, I was quickly entering my new reality. A reality comprised of burdensome student debt, now demanding repayment, as well as a daunting new income and benefit package. Being a life-long problem-solver, my natural inclination was to seek to understand and take the best available course of action.
I spent the next 4 years learning from every book, podcast, and article I could find on budgeting, personal finance, investment management and portfolio construction. This passion enabled me to pay off my student loans, identify my financial goals, and develop a custom computer application to manage my portfolio. During this time I realized most Americans lack the exposure to the topics and guidance they NEED in order to achieve their long-term financial goals. This was the impetus for me to change careers.
I chose Edward Jones because of the nearly 100 year history of serving the serious, long-term individual investor. My primary focus is to understand what is most important to my clients, identify their unique goals or challenges, work together to build personalized strategies to reach their goals, and partner for life to provide peace of mind.
You may be asking, what is a financial advisor? When is it time to speak to one? Is it worth my time? What fees can I expect from working with a human advisor? These are all great questions and are just the beginning of your journey. I want to help YOU understand the answers to questions like these, and the important questions I will ask you!
Myself, and my branch office administrator, Mariah Lewis, are here in Cardiff to serve and guide you. We are dedicated to the highest level of service because in our office, our clients are family. I'm blessed to live and work in this community and I look forward to making an impact that benefits the place we call home.”

VG Donuts and Bakery is an iconic Cardiff-by-the-Sea community business and historical landmark. As Cardiff locals, Jim and Betty Mettee with 6 kids started VG’s in 1969 in hopes to frame their own future. Jim wanted to have a business that even when times were financially difficult, he could still offer a donut and a cup of coffee to those in need and bring joy to their lives. They focused on quality ingredients, consistent product, and true customer service. Jim’s son, Joe first started working at in his early teens and became a partner before the age of 20. By the late 1970’s, he met his wife, Betty (she worked as a cashier) and in the 1980’s they took over ownership in full when Father Jim became sick.
VG Donut & Bakery is a full service bakery located in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, in Coastal North County San Diego. Specializing in the old-fashioned style of baking, VGs is owned and operated by the Mettee family since 1969, and is now a thriving third generation business. VG or “Very Good” for those who were wondering, is a local’s favorite for a fresh cup of coffee and a bakery item guaranteed to satisfy a sweet tooth.
For many customers, VG Donut & Bakery has become a tradition and a Cardiff landmark. The quick moving line that extends out the doors daily is proof that VGs is more than a bakery, it’s an institution filled with familiar faces.

The undeniable unique VG’s is still family owned and family operated by the Mettee’s whom take extreme care of their establishment, employees and pride in their baked goods. They have a great love for their family, town, weather, beaches and amazingly cool customers as well.
With Jim and Betty as amazing role models, VG’s continues to give back to community and help those in great need. Annually, they donate to the local schools extracurricular activity programs that are no longer offered or supported through the common core.
VG’s is a fun, vibrant atmosphere that every local adores. A must try, if you have never had VG’s baked goods, is the Chocolate glaze or chocolate old fashion donut. Their chocolate icing is legendary.

Keep Your Pet Safe in the Heat
Tips from VCA California Veterinary Specialists to keep your pet safe in the heat to help make sure your pet doesn’t over-heat and their paws don’t burn on surfaces.
Keep Your Pet Safe in the Heat with tips from VCA California Veterinary Specialists
California Veterinary Specialists provided some helpful tips to keep your pet safe this Summer. Read below to find out how to protect your pet's paws from hot surfaces and signs of over-heating and what to do to cool down your pet...
Surface Temperatures Can Burn Paws
Be aware, the high temperatures impact the temperature of surfaces which means the pads of your pet's feet are susceptible to burns. Dog's paws do not blister like human skin so you cannot use that to tell if it's a safe temperature or if their feet are ok. Dr. Sarah explains the dangers to your pet from the environmental summer heat in this video here located on California Specialists website. Consider the surface your dog walks on during morning and mid-day so they don't burn their paws this summer.
How do you know when your pet is dangerously over-heated?
Sandra Cosgrove, an emergency critical care technician with VCA California Veterinary Specialists, shares what pet-parents should look for and what they can quickly do to safely cool their pets. Below is a recap of the video from Sandra or check out the video here.
Signs that we can look for in heat exhaustion is heavy panting, drooling, difficulty breathing, dizziness, weakness, dry bright red or pale gums and rapid heartbeat. If you think your dog is suffering from heat stroke, it's important to get them wet immediately to have their body temperature lowered. Below are 3 steps of what you can do to lower your pet's body temperature:
1. One way to do that is to make sure they have cold water to drink.
2. Then take some towels, soak them in water and ring it on-top of them until their breathing starts to settle. It's important not to lay the towels on-top of them because that can actually keep the heat in.
3. The fastest way would be to hose them down. If your animal has signs that they need to come to the hospital make sure to water them down first then bring them straight to the E.R.
We hope you found this helpful to keep your animal safe from the heat this Summer. For more safety tips on keeping your pet cool this Summer, sign-up for The Scoop E-Newsletter from California Veterinary Specialist. Check out their website to sign-up here!

2019 Taste of Cardiff Guide
It’s that time of year again, and Taste of Cardiff is here! What better way to spend a spring evening in our beautiful town than sampling dishes from your favorite local restaurants and sipping on your favorite local beverages? In addition to the Cardiff restaurants and San Diego libations we all know and love, there will be a few newcomers this year that I am very excited about. Fish 101 will be sampling some of their grub from their new location on San Elijo Ave. which is bound to be delicious. Cardiff-by-the-Sea Lodge will be hosting two new Sip Stops, JuneShine, a local hard-kombucha company, and Pure Project, a San Diego brewery focused on tropical flavors and brewing sustainably. This event is always a blast, but here are a few do’s and don’ts to make sure you get the most out of the evening:
Do make a plan: whether you want to start at the north end of town at Cicciotti’s, the south end at Tower 13, or somewhere in between, just make sure you know where you want to start and where you want to end. There’s a lot of ground to cover and if you want to hit every taste and sip stop (which I highly recommend) you’ll just need to make sure you know where you are going. Sunset is at 7:30 pm if you want to time your route around being somewhere with a view, such as the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Lodge roof or walking along the beach to Restaurant Row.
Don’t be late: with 16 tastes and 17 sips, there is no time to waste! The event starts at 5:00 pm and will call is open at 3pm, so there is plenty of time to pick up your tickets and be where you want to be by the time the event starts. I’ve never heard anyone say they wish the event was shorter so make sure you get there as early as possible.
Do snap some photos in the Camera Camper: this is great way to get some memories of the night and take home so great pictures for free. The Camera Camper will be parked in the Cardiff Animal Hospital lot along with the band Aviator Stash so you can enjoy some tunes while in line and drink M Kombucha.
Don’t miss the music: this year there will be 7 local bands in different locations throughout the event. Genres range from indie/alternative to reggae to children’s bands, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Do ride your bike: Electra will again host a bike valet in the parking lot in front of Harbaugh Parkway on the corner of Chesterfield Dr. and San Elijo Ave. This is a great way to avoid traffic and parking, making it quick and easy to get from one end of the event to the other.
Don’t skip Restaurant Row: while it is a little further from the center of the event it is well worth the walk or ride. There are some great tastes and music to enjoy this direction, and the walk is right along the beach, something you don’t want to miss.
Do vote for the Golden Fork award: each year the participating restaurants battle it out to earn the coveted prize from the event. Tower 13 won last year and will be defending their title, but the competition will be tough as other restaurants have their eye on it. Make sure to keep note of which dish was your favorite and cast your vote after the event. An email will be sent out during the event for you to vote!
Can’t wait to see you there!

San Elijo Retaining Wall Project
About the Project:
The design of the retaining wall was brought to our attention by the City Council. Our Design Committee worked hard and closely with the Arts Commission to come up with a wall that would fit more with the community character and natural environment versus the original design if we had not discovered that this wall was going to be built...

The Cardiff-by-the-Sea Conceptual Master Plan was created back in 2014. Have you ever been on the water's edge and as the sun kissed your skin and salty air soothed your senses thought - what a perfect place to practice yoga! You're not alone! A new beachside yoga option in Encinitas takes you right to the water's edge. The enormous bluffs of Encinitas provide ideal seclusion from iPhones and traffic signals as yogis sink back into the peaceful serenity of minds harmonized with the breath, body, and healing natural elements. Socal Beach Yoga holds sessions at Swami's, Moonlight, and Grandview beaches and offers a unique option for those looking to challenge their muscles differently and stretch their minds.
Jay, who directs the content of the sessions, draws inspiration from his eclectic family history of yogis and diverse range of experience teaching beach yoga. His grandmother who has been traveling regularly to India for 50 years, lectures on meditation and self-realization in the Chicagoland area were Jay was raised. He uses his grandmother's compassion and wisdom to guide him in his teaching along with inspiration from his ancestor Siegmund Breitbart, the Jewish "Superman of the Ages" who amid rising anti-semitism in the 1920's used yoga exercises and diet to become strong enough to bend steel, be named the strongest man in the world, and inspire two young Jews to create the Superman comic a decade later. Jay used Siegmund's teachings on yoga and strength to help several Northwestern University athletic programs reach new heights, using the University's beaches as an ideal training ground. The success of the beach yoga techniques at Northwestern led to a position as partner and lead instructor of Chicago's largest beach yoga company and distinction by the Chicago Tribune as having the best outdoor yoga in the city.
In Encinitas now with his 4 year-old son and enthusiastic co-instructor D.J., Jay hopes to assist yogis forge a deeper relationship with their breath, mind, and body, enhancing their ability to cope with life's sometimes wild challenges. In "Lion Mind Yoga", young yogis 3-9 years of age are challenged just the same as their parents to direct attention at length toward their breath and visual focal points, as well as cultivate awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and breathing patterns, providing a unique chance to gain the practical responsive tools they need when the sandals go back on. This kids offering, along with the challenging yet compassionate adult sessions, he hopes will serve as a boost for all those climbing bravely toward their unique highest potentials.
